Five Card Draw Poker Rules

Five-Card Draw is one of the most popular and fun poker games to play. However, this fun game is not commonly seen outside of friendly games that are played at home or online.  Because of the simplicity of the game play, there are many people who learn the basics of poker with this game and consider it to be the best beginner's game around.

Five-Card Draw is a simple game that has a few different rules (some of which are often manipulated by players at home to make games more interesting). The start of the hand is marked by players posting various blinds/antes. These blinds/antes vary depending on the particular setting and rules that are being used, but they will generally follow a basic setup of all players posting the same amount. After the blinds/antes are posted, each player is dealt a hand of five cards that are face down, these cards are what are used to build a poker hand.

Once the cards are dealt, there is a round of betting which gives players the opportunity to bet, check (pass), raise or fold. Folding is allowed at any time when it is a particular players turn, but checking is only allowed if no other player has bet or raised from a previous bet before the check.

When the betting has ceased and all the bets are included in the pot, each player that remains in the game will be allowed to exchange their cards as they wish. In casino play and tournaments, players are allowed to exchange only one or all five of their cards.  However, in some home games, restrictions are made on this particular rule to make things more interesting.

After changing their hand (or keeping the same hand if they choose), players are allowed to bet in a final betting round. This is generally where players will fold their hands if they don’t think they can win. At the end of this round, if more than a single player is left, there is a showdown to determine who has the better hand and the pot is delivered to the winner(s).

In many Five-Card Draw games, there will be limits on trading in cards (generally three) and also advantages like wild cards that can be used as any card that is in the deck, even if it’s already in play. Jokers are always wild cards, but the dealer may also name any other card that they choose as wild, and these dealer-named cards can be used as any card or their actual value. This allows for a more interesting draw game, as it allows players to pursue various opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise exist.
